Semaglutide: what the name does and does not tell you

Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide. Wegovy has weight-management indications; Ozempic is labeled for type 2 diabetes and specified related risk reduction. Wegovy now has injectable and oral tablet formulations. The approved tablet has its own administration instructions, dose strengths, and evidence.

A compounded injection, sublingual preparation, gummy, or tablet is not the approved Wegovy product. Results from approved semaglutide trials cannot establish the effectiveness of a provider’s compounded formulation. Their contraindications include a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), MEN 2, and specified serious allergic reactions. Tell the clinician about severe stomach-emptying problems, pancreatitis or gallbladder history, kidney concerns, diabetic eye disease, and every medicine or supplement you use.
